What are the main properties of zirconia ceramic balls?

2025-12-29

Zirconia ceramic balls are inorganic non-metallic materials produced using zirconia powder and several other additives as raw materials through powder preparation, batching and forming processes. As functional ceramics, zirconia ceramic balls have a wide range of applications, such as thermal barrier coatings, catalyst carriers, medical care, health care, refractory materials and textile industries. Zirconia ceramic balls exhibit excellent properties in three aspects: mechanics, physics and chemistry.

  1. Physical Properties The physical properties of zirconia ceramic balls refer to their impact resistance and low wear rate. Thanks to the high ZrO2 content in zirconia grinding beads, these ceramic balls boast physical advantages including high density, high toughness, low wear rate, no breakage or delamination, and cause minimal dispersion contamination to the ground materials. The wear rate of zirconia ceramic balls is many times lower than that of ordinary ceramic microspheres. Meanwhile, the structure of zirconia ceramic balls is relatively more complex compared with other ceramics, and their thermal conductivity is relatively low, which gives them excellent thermal insulation performance.
  2. Mechanical Properties Zirconia ceramic balls generally have a high elastic modulus and are not prone to deformation. Even under high-temperature conditions, the deformation of zirconia ceramic balls is relatively small. At the same time, zirconia ceramic balls feature high strength, high hardness and good wear resistance, and can maintain high strength above 100 degrees Celsius, whereas most metals tend to soften or even melt under such high-temperature conditions. 3. Chemical Properties The organizational structure of zirconia ceramic balls is very stable, and under normal circumstances, they will not react with oxides in the medium. They will not oxidize not only at room temperature but also under high-temperature conditions. Zirconia ceramic balls have strong corrosion resistance to acids, alkalis, salts and molten non-ferrous metals. Except for hydrofluoric acid and molten sodium hydroxide, they can resist almost all inorganic acids and most alkaline solutions. In a word, zirconia ceramic balls have excellent chemical stability.
