Precautions for Using Zirconia Beads

2026-01-07

Zirconia ceramics are a new type of technologically advanced high-performance ceramic material. They not only possess high strength, high hardness, high temperature resistance, resistance to acid and alkali corrosion, and excellent chemical stability, but also exhibit outstanding scratch and wear resistance, a flawless appearance, and superior heat dissipation performance. In addition, zirconia ceramics are easy to process, can achieve an excellent visual finish, and are highly suitable for mass production.

The following points should be noted when using zirconia beads:

  1. Select the Appropriate Zirconia Beads Selecting the right zirconia beads is a crucial step. Due to the variations in their hardness, surface smoothness, particle size distribution, wear resistance, and chemical properties (non-reactivity with the material being ground), the most suitable type must be chosen based on the type of grinding material, the target particle size, and the desired fineness of the ground product.
  2. Pre-Grinding Treatment When using zirconia beads for the first time, they should be pre-ground in a slurry of moderate viscosity for approximately 30 minutes. If the slurry concentration is low, the rotation speed must be reduced, and the pre-grinding time should not exceed 15 minutes.
  3. Cleaning and Maintenance When grinding paints, it is recommended to clean the zirconia beads with resin. If a solvent must be used for cleaning, the rotation speed should be reduced, and the cleaning time should not exceed 10 minutes. For more effective cleaning, an intermittent cleaning method is advised: start the machine for a period of cleaning, then stop it, and restart it again subsequently.
  4. Replenishing Zirconia Beads After a period of grinding, the zirconia beads will experience a certain degree of wear due to mutual collision between them. Therefore, it is necessary to replenish them with new beads after prolonged use. Before replenishment, a sieve should be used to remove any broken beads, and then new zirconia beads of equal weight to the removed ones should be added.
  5. Other Occasions for Bead Replenishment Replenishment of a certain amount of zirconia beads is also required in the following situations: when the required grinding fineness remains unchanged but the grinding time needs to be extended, or when the fineness achieved after grinding fails to meet the desired standard. As a non-metallic grinding medium with a wide range of applications, zirconia beads have numerous practical use cases. Currently, they are particularly extensively applied in the fields of grinding and dispersion. In terms of grinding, they are mainly used in sand mills; in terms of dispersion, they are primarily used in high-speed agitator mills.
